Enrol Now for Term 4 2023 and 2024

Our Life Skills Program

My Place is a life skills centre designed for young people between the ages of 18-21, living with a disability. Our Program of Support* aims to build the life skills of young people so that they can participate and carry out tasks independently at home, in employment opportunities and in their local community. The centre runs with a 1 staff:4 participant ratio.

Our Goals

  1. Ensure anti-discrimination

  2. Full participation of participants

  3. Independent living

  4. Economic self-sufficiency

My Place is designed to feel like home! We have functioning kitchen and laundry facilities, a fold out bed to practise bed making, a dining area and even a lounge area. Our facilitators encourage participants to take ownership in the centre by helping to maintain it. Participants take turns undertaking certain housekeeping tasks, help in online grocery shopping and engage collaboratively with others in making decisions about daily activities.

What are life skills?

Life skills are the tools and skill sets that allow individuals to perform daily tasks to develop into active and productive members of the community.

Life skills prepare an individual to act in situations where carers may not be able to assist.

There are 3 major life skills areas: daily living, social skills, and occupational skills.

  • Daily Living Skills

We facilitate opportunities for building daily living skills such as handling money, shopping, housekeeping, self-care, safety awareness and meal preparation.

  • Social Skills

Social skills allow individuals to get along with others and participate in society. We provide opportunities for building self-awareness, social responsibility, problem solving strategies and communication skills.

  • Occupational Skills

We assist in developing appropriate work-habits and assist in educating about methods of job seeking.

*Our Program of Support courses run for the duration of 10-11 weeks. Each participant works towards Agreed Intended Outcomes in conjunction with their NDIS plan goals, which are reviewed and reported on at the end of each term. Participants can re-enrol to work towards a new Agreed Intended Outcome.
